What is the Wellness Lab?

The Wellness Lab is our dedicated space for non-invasive, technology-led recovery treatments. It brings together four complementary therapies, each with a strong evidence base, so we can build a recovery and wellness plan tailored specifically to you. The Wellness Lab is suitable for people who are:

  • Managing a chronic pain or nerve condition and want to complement their treatment programme
  • Recovering from injury or surgery and want to accelerate the healing process
  • Active and want to recover faster, perform better, and reduce injury risk
  • Wanting to proactively maintain their health and mobility as they get older
  • Looking for a drug-free, non-invasive approach to pain and recovery

Treatments Available in the Wellness Lab

Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation)

Available at both our Portsmouth and Eastleigh clinics

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular repair, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue healing. A meta-analysis published in the Clinical Journal of Pain found that photobiomodulation significantly reduced pain across a range of musculoskeletal conditions (Fulop et al., 2010).

Reference: Fulop AM et al. (2010). A meta-analysis of the efficacy of laser phototherapy on pain relief. Clinical Journal of Pain, 26(8), 729-736.

Sessions are painless, non-invasive, and take 10 to 20 minutes. Suitable for musculoskeletal pain, post-surgical recovery, chronic inflammation, and general wellness.

Stimpod Nerve Therapy

Available at both our Portsmouth and Eastleigh clinics

An FDA-cleared device using pulsed radiofrequency stimulation to target damaged or irritated nerves directly. Highly effective for neuropathy, diabetic nerve pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, and post-surgical nerve sensitivity. Clinical research has demonstrated meaningful reductions in neuropathic pain where pharmacological management had been insufficient (Sluijter et al., 2013, Pain Practice).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Available exclusively at our Eastleigh clinic

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber, significantly increasing the amount of oxygen dissolved in your blood plasma. This increased oxygen availability supports faster tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and promotes the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissue.

A review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found hyperbaric oxygen therapy to be an effective adjunctive treatment for a range of conditions involving impaired tissue healing, including chronic wounds and soft tissue injury (Camporesi, 2014).

Reference: Camporesi EM (2014). Side effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, 41(3), 253-257.

HBOT is increasingly used by athletes and active individuals to accelerate recovery from injury and intense training, as well as by people managing chronic pain conditions and slow-healing wounds. Sessions are relaxing and require you to simply breathe normally inside the chamber while it is pressurised.

Compression Boot Therapy

Available exclusively at our Eastleigh clinic

Compression boot therapy uses sequential pneumatic compression, inflating and deflating chambers along the legs in a wave-like pattern, to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and accelerate the clearance of metabolic waste from muscle tissue after exercise or injury.

Research into pneumatic compression has shown it to be effective at reducing perceived muscle soreness and improving recovery markers following intense exercise (Sands et al., 2014, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research).

Reference: Sands WA et al. (2014). Dynamic compression enhances pressure-to-pain threshold in elite athlete recovery. Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 28(4), 1058-1064.

Compression boot therapy is particularly popular with runners, cyclists, and gym-goers as part of their regular recovery routine, and is equally valuable for patients recovering from injury or surgery who are managing swelling in the lower limb.

Combining Treatments for Better Results

Many of our patients combine more than one Wellness Lab treatment for a more comprehensive approach. For example, patients managing diabetic neuropathy or post-surgical nerve pain often combine Stimpod with red light therapy. Athletes and active patients visiting our Eastleigh clinic frequently combine compression boot therapy with hyperbaric oxygen for a complete recovery session.
We will recommend the most appropriate combination of treatments for your specific goals and condition at your initial assessment.

Which Clinic Should I Visit?

  • Red light therapy and Stimpod nerve therapy: available at both our Portsmouth and Eastleigh clinics
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and compression boot therapy: available exclusively at our Eastleigh clinic

If you are interested in hyperbaric oxygen or compression boot therapy, please book at our Eastleigh clinic. If you are based nearer Portsmouth and interested in these treatments, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss your options.

Who the Wellness Lab Is For

  • People aged 45 and over who want to stay healthy, mobile, and active long term
  • Athletes and active people focused on optimising recovery between training sessions
  • Anyone managing chronic pain, nerve pain, or inflammatory conditions
  • Post-surgical patients wanting to accelerate healing and reduce swelling or scar formation
  • People with neuropathy, diabetic nerve pain, or unexplained nerve symptoms
  • Those who have tried medication and conventional treatments without lasting relief

What to Expect

Your first Wellness Lab visit begins with a short assessment so we understand your goals, health history, and which treatments are most appropriate for you. We will explain exactly what each treatment involves, what you will feel during the session, and what outcomes you can realistically expect.

Sessions are relaxing and require no recovery time. Most patients return to normal activity immediately afterwards. Many people incorporate Wellness Lab visits into their regular routine, much like a sports massage or gym session.

Wellness Lab FAQs

Do I need to be a current patient to use the Wellness Lab?
No. The Wellness Lab is open to new and existing patients. If you are new to Active Motion, we will carry out a brief assessment at your first visit to make sure the treatments are appropriate for you.

Are hyperbaric oxygen and compression boot therapy available in Portsmouth?
Not currently. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and compression boot therapy are available exclusively at our Eastleigh clinic. Red light therapy and Stimpod nerve therapy are available at both our Portsmouth and Eastleigh locations.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?
Yes, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment with a strong safety record when delivered appropriately. We will carry out a full health screening before your first session to confirm it is suitable for you, as there are certain medical conditions where it is not appropriate.

Can I combine Wellness Lab treatments with my injury rehabilitation?
Absolutely, and many patients do. These treatments work very well alongside manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation, accelerating tissue healing and recovery between sessions.

How many sessions will I need?
This depends entirely on what you are managing. Some patients come for a one-off recovery boost. Others incorporate regular sessions as part of an ongoing wellness routine. For therapeutic goals such as managing neuropathy or recovering from surgery, we will recommend a course of treatment and review progress as you go.

Is the Wellness Lab suitable for older adults?
Yes. All four treatments are gentle, non-invasive, and have excellent safety profiles for people of all ages, including those with complex health histories. Many of our Wellness Lab patients are in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.

What is compression boot therapy used for?
Compression boot therapy is most commonly used to speed up recovery after intense exercise, reduce muscle soreness, and manage swelling in the legs following injury or surgery. It is particularly popular with runners and cyclists as a regular part of their training and recovery routine.
