What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy (ESWT: Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) uses high-energy acoustic sound waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process in damaged or degenerated tissue. It is non-invasive, does not require injections, and has a strong evidence base for a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

A systematic review published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research found shockwave therapy to be significantly more effective than placebo for chronic tendinopathies, with benefits sustained at 12-week follow-up (Mani-Babu et al., 2015).

Reference: Mani-Babu S et al. (2015). The efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in lower limb tendinopathy. American Journal of Sports Medicine, 43(3), 752-761.

It works by increasing blood flow to the affected area, breaking down calcifications, and triggering cellular repair. Many patients notice improvement within 3 to 6 sessions.

Conditions Shockwave Therapy Treats

    • Plantar fasciitis: particularly stubborn or long-standing heel pain
    • Achilles tendinopathy: both mid-tendon and insertional
    • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
    • Sennis elbow and golfer’s elbow (lateral and medial epicondylalgia)
    • Rotator cuff tendinopathy and calcific tendinitis
    • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (hip bursitis)
    • Chronic lower back pain
    • Shin splints (chronic cases)

If you have tried rest, massage, or exercises and your injury keeps returning, shockwave therapy may be the treatment that finally breaks the cycle.

Shockwave Therapy FAQs

Is shockwave therapy painful?
It can be uncomfortable during the session. Most patients describe a deep, pulsing sensation over the treated area. The level of discomfort is manageable and typically brief. Any soreness after treatment usually settles within 24 to 48 hours.

How many shockwave sessions will I need?
Most conditions respond to a course of 6 sessions, delivered weekly or fortnightly. We will recommend the appropriate number based on your condition and how you respond to treatment.

Is shockwave therapy safe?
Yes. Shockwave therapy is an established, evidence-based treatment used in clinics worldwide. It is non-invasive and has very few side effects. We will conduct a full assessment before treatment to confirm it is appropriate for your condition.

Can shockwave therapy be combined with other treatment?
Absolutely, and it usually is. We typically combine shockwave with manual therapy and rehabilitation exercises for the best outcomes. It is part of a tailored treatment plan, not a standalone intervention.

How much does each session cost for Shockwave Therapy?
We offer a FREE consultation to ensure that we can help you. After hearing more about what you are currently suffering with and answering any questions you may have. A qualified practitioner will put together a tailored plan for you. The number of sessions will depend on a number of factors such as the duration of symptoms and their history.

Lewis was so professional assessing and diagnosing my bilateral plantar fasciitis. I was at the end of my tether and he gave me hope that the shockwave treatment would help and he was correct and treatment by treatment I improved even though I knew it would be a journey . 10/10 would trust Lewis again and recommend for management of plantar fasciitis. Thank you lewis

Saw Lewis regularly for a few months as my plantar fasciitis had become worse than ever before and no amount of the usual exercises was helping this time. He gave me shockwave therapy and worked on my Achilles too, and gradually the pain has diminished, to the point where I rarely even notice it now. He’s a miracle worker…100% recommended. I booked in for a sports massage with Millie who really got to work on my glutes and lower back muscles. It was all over clothes so no embarrassment or feeling exposed and after the first one hour session, and a few days recovery as my body adjusted to all the deep massage points, I felt like a new woman and almost no pain and much more mobile. I had another session one month later to continue to work on those areas and again, she was friendly, professional, listened to when I asked for firmer pressure, starting in a less tight area or giving me a minute’s break. The pain is 90% gone even after a month of no treatment and after just two sessions and I am much more able to stand, walk and do other activities. I can’t recommend her enough! Thanks Millie!

I've suffered traconteric bursitis in both legs for many years and despite GP and the usual treatments my condition wasn't improving, just getting excruciatingly worse. I was miserable with it, not sleeping or fully engaging in life. Four months ago I stumbled across the Active Motion Clinic. They specialised in particular with bursitis issues. I made contact and have since had a course of treatments. The difference and improvement in my condition is tenfold. I'm finally almost pain free and able to get back to being more active and engaging in life. I so wish I had found this type of treatment years ago. Lewis is an excellent and skilled practitioner and really does know his subject. I would recommend Active Motion to anyone with similar conditions. Thankyou Jordan and Lewis for doing what you do. It's been life changing for me. Thankyou.
