Strength, Mobility and Active Ageing for the Over-50s Portsmouth and Eastleigh
Active Motion Injury Clinic specialises in helping people aged 45 and over stay strong, mobile, and independent, without relying on painkillers, injections, or the endless cycle of rest-and-return that leaves most people no better off than when they started.
We work with people who want to keep walking, running, gardening, golfing, and playing with their grandchildren well into their 60s, 70s, and beyond.

Why Strength Training Changes Everything After 50?
Most people are told to stay active and go for walks when they experience pain or reduced mobility. Walking is valuable, but research consistently shows that structured resistance training produces significantly better outcomes for strength, balance, bone density, and independence in older adults.
A peer-reviewed study comparing resistance circuit training and walking in older women found that resistance training produced substantially greater improvements in muscle strength, functional capacity, and quality of movement (Balachandran et al., 2022, BMC Geriatrics; PMC9319797).

The implications are clear. If you want to stay independent and pain-free in later life, building and maintaining muscle mass is essential. At Active Motion, we make that practical, achievable, and safe, regardless of your current fitness level or health history.

Over 50's FAQs
Is resistance training safe for older adults?
Yes, when appropriately programmed and supervised. Research consistently shows resistance training is safe and beneficial for adults of all ages, including those with osteoporosis, arthritis, and other health conditions. Our team has extensive experience working with older adults and will progress your programme at the right pace for you.
I have not exercised in years. Can I still start?
Absolutely. Many of our most remarkable recoveries have involved people who had not exercised for years. We meet you exactly where you are and build from there.
Is walking not enough to stay fit as I get older?
Walking is beneficial for cardiovascular health and mood, but it does not build muscle mass, improve bone density, or develop the strength and balance needed to prevent falls and maintain independence. Combining walking with structured strength work gives you far better long-term outcomes.
What if I have arthritis or a joint replacement?
Both are conditions we work with regularly. In many cases targeted strength training reduces joint pain and improves function in arthritic joints. We will work alongside your medical team if needed and programme appropriately for your situation.
How much does the Strength Programme Cost?
