What Is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is a specialist area of clinical practice focused on preventing and overcoming musculoskeletal injuries and improving movement quality, daily function and performance. It is not just for elite athletes. It is for anyone who wants to move well and stay active, at any level and any age.

At Active Motion, we work with recreational runners, gym-goers, weekend golfers, netball players, cyclists, and people who simply want to stay in good health and mobile as they get older. Our approach combines hands-on treatment, targeted exercise rehabilitation, and expert coaching to deliver lasting results.

Injuries and Conditions We Treat

  • Running injuries: shin splints, IT band syndrome, runner’s knee, stress fractures
  • Ligament sprains: ankle, knee, and wrist
  • Tendinopathies: Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, and golfer’s and tennis elbow
  • Muscle tears and strains: hamstring, calf, quad, and groin
  • Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation: including ACL reconstruction
  • Pain: during or after weight training
  • Shoulder injuries: rotator cuff tears, impingement, instability
  • Hip and groin problems

One of our patients ruptured her ACL in December playing netball. Working with Jordan ahead of her reconstruction surgery, she built strength, mobility, and confidence to the point she sometimes forgot about her injury. She said she felt mentally and physically prepared for both the operation and the rehabilitation ahead.

Performance Benefits

Sports therapy is not only about recovery. Many of our patients come to us to improve their performance: running faster, lifting heavier, or moving more efficiently to reduce future injury risk.

  • Increased strength and power output
  • Improved movement quality and biomechanics
  • Reduced injury risk through targeted conditioning
  • Better recovery between training sessions
  • Enhanced sports-specific movement patterns

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your first session is a thorough assessment, not just a quick look. We will discuss your symptoms, training history, and goals in detail. We will then examine the root cause, not just where it hurts. Within that first appointment we will start treatment and give you exercises and advice to begin making progress immediately.

Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, you will stay with the same therapist throughout your course of treatment. Continuity of care is important to us.

Sports Therapy FAQs

What is the difference between sports therapy and sports massage?
Sports massage focuses on soft tissue work, releasing tight muscles and aiding recovery. Sports therapy is broader and clinical in nature. It includes assessment, diagnosis, hands-on treatment, and a structured rehabilitation programme to address the underlying cause of your problem.

How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your injury, how long you have had it, and how well you implement advice between sessions.

Can I still train while receiving sports therapy?
In most cases yes, with modifications. We will advise you on what you can and cannot do and structure your training around your recovery to keep you as active as possible.

Do you work with athletes preparing for events?
Absolutely. We regularly help runners, cyclists, and other athletes build to race fitness while managing injury risk. We will create a programme that works around your event schedule.

How much does each session cost for a Sports Therapy Appointment?
We offer a FREE consultation to ensure that we can help you. After hearing more about what you are currently suffering with and answering any questions you may have. A qualified practitioner will put together a tailored plan for you. The number of sessions will depend on a number of factors such as the duration of symptoms and their history.
